Flo Rida

I am taking a break from NaNoWriMo to gush about my husband, and one of the many reasons why I love him. I’m not sure if you are aware of this, but Joshua and I are dorks. You are aware? I see. Well, this should solidify that impression for you.

Last night, after the lights were out and we were ready to go to sleep, Joshua and I were (for some random reason) exchanging different phrases and names with the word “flow”: go with the flow; Flo from Mel’s Diner (can I age myself please?), etc. Then I came up with Flo Rida. I am in no way familiar with who this artist is. I’m not entirely certain why this artist is included in my knowledge bank (was he, perhaps, on Ellen once?); but he is, and I offered his name up.

Joshua had no idea who I was talking about, and as I am completely unfamiliar with Flo Rida, I had to look him up to make sure I didn’t make the name up. As you know, I’m in solid NaNoWriMo mode; so my laptop was a couple feet away, and I was easily able to appease my curiosity. Once Joshua saw the name, the first thing he noticed was that Flo Rida is spelled exactly like the state Florida! I’m a little slow because I didn’t notice. I know, I know. I said I was slow.

If he only knew what that observation would start, I don’t think Joshua would have brought attention to the spelling similarity, because then we wanted to come up with our own cool names using state spellings (or sounds). And each of our names came with an introduction.

What happens when Nolan gets into the crayons? Color Ado

What did the miners say at the end of the job? Ore Gon

And for the geeky statisticians… What band is an encouragement for a statistics application? Kan SAS

And theatre fans… What did Uta Hagen’s name her band? Uta H

Of course, we couldn’t stop there. Joshua moved the word play across our borders when we had come up with names for most of the 50 states (I kid you not).

What does a French Nolan like to do at the dinner table? Bang le D(i)sh

I know it’s P.C. to be green nowadays, but I Mad a Gas Car.

As the night progressed and we were more and more tired, our offerings were increasingly silly and outrageous. Feeling confined, Joshua moved the game to include movie names and random objects. Minutes ticked by and we showed no sign of slowing. We knew we would be dead in the morning if we didn’t stop soon. We eventually had to promise ourselves not to share any more. Though we came up with new names, we had to keep them to ourselves no matter how brilliant our addled minds believed they were. It was well past midnight, and we had played this silly game for an embarrassingly long time.

It’s things like this that make me love Joshua even more (who knew that was possible?). I laughed so much tears rolled down my face. Some of Joshua’s puns were delivered with hilarious accents. Some of our ideas were so awful, they demanded to be laughed at. I’m sure I would feel more rested today if we stopped early on, but I’m glad we didn’t. I am full of love. I continue to laugh today as I remember a particularly creative pun. Good times with my best friend, my favorite person in the world, my heart.

If this post gives you even a fraction of the amusement the actual experience provided me, you are sure to be tickled for a while.

SIDE NOTE: I wonder if I could find a way to incorporate this post into my novel so I can include its word count…Hmmmmm…
